Some multi-space parking meters have experienced a delay in transmitting transactions due to the removal of several cell towers, an issue resulting in delayed posting to some users' debit or credit card accounts.
Some machines have had sporadic communication failures, but then returned online, so the situation has been intermittent. We are changing the SIM cards in all of the affected machines as an immediate solution and should have that implemented soon.
To the customer purchasing a parking receipt, the pay stations appeared to work normally. The transactions were stored securely in the machines, and the machines issued correct parking receipts for display. However, when the new SIM cards transmit the old transactions, the transaction date that users see on their credit or debit card bills will be the date that the SIM card was replaced, not the date that they parked.
Those who have used multi-space meters may note on their bills that that they did not park in Berkeley on the date(s) reflected on the charges, due to this late transmittal of the information. The 311 Customer Service Call Center will be able to provide customers information about what happened and also an explanation of the City's process to correct it.
