Fees

Building permit fees are based on the valuation of your project. The value or valuation used in computing the building permit fee shall be the total value of all construction work for which the permit is issued as well as all finish work, painting, roofing, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, elevators, fire extinguishing systems and any other permanent equipment.

The Permit Fee Estimator may be used to estimate building permit fees for your project by entering the address, selecting the appropriate scope of work and entering the valuation. The Estimate of Building Permit Fees will appear when you click on the "Calculate" button. The fees shown are typical fees related to a building permit and do not include fees for plumbing, mechanical and/or electrical permits that may also be necessary.

Fees shown here are only an estimate, actual fees due for your project will be reviewed and finalized as part of the plan check process.

There may be other fees that may apply to your project that are not shown here, but may apply due to the nature of your project such as the sewer connection fees. The plan check fee is due at permit application with the balance due at permit approval/issuance.

Some projects may require land use permit(s) that will result in additional permits and fees for your project. The Land Use Planning division will be able to assist you with those requirements at (510) 981-7410. Current planning fees are listed in the following document: Land Use Planning Fees (.pdf)

The Commercial Fee Schedule (.pdf) and Residential Fee Schedule (.pdf) have charts that may be used to estimate fees for valuations up to including $100,000. Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permit fee schedules are included as part of the commercial and residential schedules for your use.

The Project Valuation Estimator is provided to assist you in estimating your valuation. Once you have estimated your valuation, use it with either the Permit Fee Estimator, Residential Fee Schedule or Commercial Fee Schedule to obtain an estimate of fees.
