The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is responsible for the preservation and protection of Berkeley's cultural and historic landmarks. The LPC is also responsible for making discretionary decisions for alterations to cultural and historic landmarks. The LPC generally meets on the 1st Thursday of each month at the North Berkeley Senior Center. |Shattuck Avenue Historic Context Statement and Survey Project
|Furthering City Downtown Area Plan and State Historic Preservation Plan goals, the Survey Project provided the mapping, research, documentation, and analysis necessary to fully consider the potential for a Shattuck Avenue commercial corridor historic district.
The methodology involved developing an iterative historic context statement based on researching records. Intensive field survey work was conducted, documenting the architecture, features, and integrity of original building fabric, in order to identify potential district boundaries and contributors.
The Project was overseen by the AdHoc Survey Subcommittee of the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), which met publicly between February and August 2015, with a Project kick-off meeting in February 2015 and regular reports to the LPC. Members of the public in attendance at subcommittee and LPC meetings included representatives of the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Berkeley Association, among others.
The LPC considered the final Project Report with proposed potential historic district boundaries in September, and the Project Report was posted and forwarded on to the State in compliance with grant requirements.
The Project Report provides the following valuable information:
- Heritage Tourism information to assist broader efforts such as marketing, interpretive signage, and public art programs.
- Rehabilitation Tax Credit information to allow owners of contributing properties to apply for historic rehabilitation tax credits
- Historic Resource Evaluation information required to inform the environmental review process for downtown development proposals
