Commercial Renewable & Energy Efficiency Programs

Programs for Businesses:

CECO (Commercial Energy Conservation Ordinance) Adopted in 1994, CECO requires commercial property owners to complete certain energy conservation measures in their buildings upon transfer of property ownership or when additions or renovations are made. Compliance with CECO measures saves money and reduces the amount of greenhouse emissions in commercial properties.

California FIRST CaliforniaFIRST is a financing program for solar and energy efficiency upgrades for businesses. CaliforniaFIRST connects property owners to low-cost capital through an innovative framework called "Property Assessed Clean Energy" (PACE). California FIRST works with commercial buildings, which include multifamily (5 or more units), industrial and agricultural properties.

SmartSolar Program SmartSolar, a program of CESC, offers free information and technical assistance to encourage Berkeley property owners to install renewable energy to power their homes and businesses. SmartSolar provides individualized independent technical assistance and an online mapping tool to assess solar potential for any roof in the City. To map your solar installation visit the Berkeley Solar Map

SmartLights Smart Lights, a program of CESC, is specially designed to help small businesses become more energy-efficient. The program offers free start-to-finish technical assistance and instant rebates to help defray the cost of upgrading and/or repairing existing equipment. Smart Lights can help with comprehensive lighting retrofits, refrigeration tune-ups, controls, and seals replacement, replacing domestic hot water heaters, and referrals to appropriate HVAC programs.

Building Energy Smart Awards Berkeley gives out energy leadership awards through the Energy Smart Awards program to businesses and building owners who benchmark their building's energy use. Benchmarking uses ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager software, developed by the EPA, to track energy use in a building. It is the first step to making buildings more energy efficient.

Green Business City of Berkeley's Office of Economic Development promotes programs that improve businesses’ environmental performance and reduce operating costs. Additionally, this program helps market Berkeley as a place to grow and locate businesses that put environmental quality at the core of the firm’s mission and provide quality jobs.

Build It Green A professional non-profit organization that partners with public agencies, building industry professionals, manufacturers, suppliers, and non-profits, to offer training and technical assistance as it relates to green building. The Build It Green website offers materials regarding sustainable building products and practices as well as referrals to green building professionals.

Climate Action Plan The Climate Action Plan (CAP) is a set of strategies that guide community efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These strategies focus on improving energy efficiency and conservation in our homes and businesses, promoting more sustainable means of transportation and reducing our waste. Berkeley's goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. Check out how we are doing toward reaching Climate Action targets at Climate Action Plan Progress.
