Certified Food Handler Training Program

A one-day intensive training and certification class in food safety is being offered by the City of Berkeley Environmental Health Division.

This new law requires at least one employee at a food facility to be certified by passing an approved examination.  Certificates expire five (5) years from date of issuance per State law.

Who should attend this training course?

  • Any food facilities handling unpackaged foods
  • Restaurants
  • Delicatessens
  • Mobile Food Prep Units ("hot trucks")
  • Commissaries
  • Caterers

What will be covered during the training?

  • Causes of foodborne illness and ways to prevent it
  • Micro-organisms
  • Potentially hazardous foods (PHFs)
  • Time and Temperature control of PHFs
  • Employee health and hygiene
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Cross-contamination

Space is limited to 20 people per class. Second choice class date will be assigned if first choice class is full.  Classes with fewer than 5 people may be subject to rescheduling.

All classes are taught in English, though Spanish exam can be provided by request at the time of registration.  Training in other languages may be provided by different testing agencies.  Please call for details or your district inspector for more information. 

This training course is presented by City of Berkeley Environmental Health staff in order to assist those taking the certification exam.  Participation does not guarantee successfully passing the exam, but it will supplement the training booklet and enhance the participants’ understanding of course material.

Certified Food Handler Training and Examination Date

If your facility still needs a Certified Food Handler, or must re-certify, you may enroll in the courses offered by the City of Berkeley Environmental Health.  State law requires at least one owner or employee at a food facility to be certified by passing an approved examination.  Certificate expire five (5) years from issue date per state law.

Class & Exam: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. 

Exam Only: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Fee:  $147--New Students (includes training booklet/exam)
           $90--Re-Certification (no training booklet)
           $40--Cost of exam and answer sheet only
           $25--Training booklet only

Exam ONLY:  If you wish to skip the review and just take the exam, you may enroll for any date listed above, space permitting.  Test can be taken at 10:00 a.m.

The Training Registration Form and additional information can be obtained at the Environmental Health Division office at 2180 Milvia Street, 2nd Floor, in Berkeley. The registration fee must be paid in cash or check payable to the City of Berkeley Environmental Health Division.
