Support for Caregivers of Senior Citizens
Family, friends and neighbors of seniors must often take on the responsibilities of caring for older ailing relatives. Services provided by the Aging Services Division are meant to support efforts of family and community members who can become stressed or overwhelmed with their caregiver role.
What We Can Provide
Consultation services provide an opportunity to speak with a member of our case management team and receive advice and referrals to support systems. If you have recently become a caregiver of an older adult, or the senior in your life is facing new challenges, our caregiver consultant can help you develop caregiver strategies as well as a plan for self care.
Caregiver Information and Assistance
Caregivers may be faced with navigating a complicated social service system for the first time. Our Information and Assistance services can help link caregivers and care receivers with services that can help both.
Through one-on-one consultations, case managers provide basic education about issues that caregivers face. Also, the Aging Services Division periodically provides groups and seminars for caregivers. Check the Tri-City Nugget, our monthly newsletter, for the latest classes and seminars available to caregivers.
Respite for Caregivers
The Senior Centers in Berkeley offer a safe, welcoming environment for seniors who are able to manage their self-care. A nutritious, low-sodium lunch is served Monday through Friday, and each center offers many social and educational opportunities. Both senior centers provide transport to and from the Center for Berkeley residents. Caregivers can meet with staff at the senior center to learn about programs at the centers, and discuss senior’s needs.
If you are interested in participating in a caregiver group or for more information about caregiver consultation, information & assistance, or education, call either Senior Center to speak with a Senior Services Assistant.
