The Alameda Road Diet

The City’s Office of Transportation has developed a plan to restripe The Alameda from Solano Avenue to Hopkins.  It will be restriped from four lanes to three, with outside lanes for traffic, a center lane for left-hand turns and dedicated bike lanes for bicyclists and right turns.  From the Office of Transportation:

Once complete, The Alameda will have a cross section similar to Marin Avenue.  The work extends from Solano to just south of Hopkins.  .  .  The work will involve grinding out existing lane markings, laying out the new marking locations on the asphalt (cat tracking), City approval of the layout, and installation of the permanent thermoplastic markings.  The road will remain open to traffic with localized lane closures and shifts as the work proceeds.

Work on the project will begin Monday, August 12 and proceed for approximately two weeks.

The primary goal of the project is to improve pedestrian safety.

Other goals include:

  •  Improving pedestrain safety particularly around the North Branch Library.
  •  Improving the safety of left turns
  • Creating dedicated bike lanes.
  • Improving safety for exiting parked cars.
  • Providing room fro The Alameda Residents to back out of their driveways.
  • Eliminating the south-bound merge lane below Hopkins.
  • Reducing traffic speeds.

Parking along this stretch of The Alameda will be prohibited during construction.  Please know there may be traffic delays but no road closures.
