Parks Capital Improvement Projects - Recurring capital funding is used to address our most critical unfunded needs and allows selected projects in our City parks to be accomplished annually on an ongoing basis. These funds along with Measure WW provides funding for the acquisition, restoration and improvements of parks and recreation facilities.  These improvements include safety and accessibility; replacing deteriorated play equipment; repairing or replacing site furnishings; improvements to existing playing fields for increased youth sports opportunities and basic infrastructure improvements including rehabilitation of sports courts, lighting, eroding walkways and irrigation renovations. Measure WW Bonds & Grants -

Measure WW is a local grant program for the acquisition and development of countywide and regional parks and recreation facilities. It is funded by a bond measure approved by Alameda County and Contra Costa County voters in November 2008. Of the total $500 million in bond funding, 75% ($375 million) will fund East Bay Regional Park District acquisition and development and 25% ($125 million) is available to East Bay cities based on population. The City of Berkeley received $4.876 million.  The City conducted a distribution process through Parks and Recreation Commission in 2010 and all the funds have been allocated to the following projects:

  •  East Touchdown Plaza at Aquatic Park
    Scope of Work: Site and access improvements between the base of Addison Street and the I-80 Bike Bridge, including a plaza and seating at the north end of the Main Lagoon.
    Project Status: Construction documents are completed
    Funding: $800,000 of SHOPP TEA funding plus $125,000 from Bayer, Inc.

  • San Pablo Park Basketball Court Renovation Project: 

    Scope:  basketball court resurfacing; new lights, fencing, backboards, and benches; and new landscaping. 
    Construction budget: $384,870; Site Status: Basketball courts are now open for public use.  
    Project Status: Project is complete

  • King School Park

  • Gilman Street Sports Fields Project - Phase One

    Design:    SFE Landscape Design, Inc.
    Construction: McGuire and Hester, Inc.
                            Sand Channel Greens, Inc.
    Construction budget:  $7 million
    Status:    Phase One of the Gilman Project was completed and opened to the public on August 15, 2008, and the facility was formally named the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex by the East Bay Regional Park District.  Phase One provides two all-purpose lighted synthetic fields, and three natural turf fields  to be available in the Spring of March 2009.  


    Phase Two of the project involved the installation of baseball and softball fields and amenities (parking, lighting, etc.)
    The fields are operated by a non-profit organization called the Association for Sports Field Users (ASFU) and are open to the public by reservation only.  To reserve fields, send an email to

  • Bateman Mall Park TotlotBateman Tot Lot 

Scope of Work:  Construction Contract for Play Area Safety and Accessibility Compliance
Consultant:  Dillingham Associates, Landscape Architects
Construction Cost:  $108,564
Contractor:  G & G Builders, Inc. Livermore, CA

In order to comply with safety and accessibility regulations, the City has contracted with Dillingham Associates Landscape Architects to prepare construction documents for the replacement of the tot play equipment at Bateman Mall Park.  Other program elements in the play area and directly adjacent include accessible surfacing, an accessible drinking fountain, and accessible tot picnic tables.
Tot play area was open to public use on April 9, 2010.

  • The Balustrade at the Circle Repairs Balustrade 

Scope:  Install repairs to vehicle-damaged historical features at the south side of the Circle.
Construction Cost:  $124,000

Scope:  Install new 50’ high netting and posts at northeast baseball field
