2002-2005

The Gateway Public Art Projects are designed to give the City's borders a recognizable entry at the three principal access routes to Berkeley: the Berkeley/Oakland Boarder, the Ashby Ave/7th Street Intersection, and the University Ave Exit / I-80 Pedestrian Bridge. These artworks will help distinguish Berkeley from neighboring cities by serving as a transition from one vicinity to the next.

Two projects were initiated in 2002, one in South Berkeley near the BART overpass on MLK Jr. Way (completed) and the second project near the I-80 Bicycle/Pedestrian Over Crossing in West Berkeley (in process). The Ashby Ave/7th Street Gateway Project will be an upcoming project in the near future.

The contract for the South Berkeley site was awarded to team artists Steve Gillman and Katherine Keefer, who have created a large steel sculpture of the words "HERETHERE".

The contract for the West Berkeley site was awarded to Scott Donahue, who will create two large to be placed in the context of the Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge.
