Licensing and Citations
This article describes the processes for licensing your dog and clearing citations (both BAMC and City of Berkeley).
How to License Your Dog
Every dog living in the City of Berkeley and over the age of 6 months must be licensed. You can purchase your Berkeley dog license at the Animal Shelter, 1 Bolivar Drive during regular business hours or at the License and Collections Department, 1947 Center Street, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
You may also access information regarding dog licenses online at: Animal Licenses
You must provide proof of current rabies vaccination and, if applicable, a veterinarian certificate of spay or neuter. Spayed or neutered dog licenses are half price.
The Berkeley Animal Care & Services Division issues two types of citations.
1. Berkeley/Albany Municipal Court Citations (BAMC)
Purchase your dog license as described above.
Take the citation and proof of current dog license to either:
The Traffic Window, 2120 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, 1st floor (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), or
The Animal Shelter, 1 Bolivar Drive -- Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat -- 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. , Wed. -- 10:00 to 7:00 and Sun. -- 11:00 to 3:00.
Failure to complete this process within 14 working days from the date of violation will result in a fine.
2. City of Berkeley /Administrative Citations
The role of the administrative citation is give violators a strong financial incentive to cure their violations.
The process of obtaining a dog license remains the same. Along with the purchase of the dog license is a $100.00 fine that is processed as a penalty for violation of a City ordinance.
