2020 Vision for Berkeley's Children and Youth
2020 Vision is a citywide movement to ensure academic success and well-being for all children and youth growing up in Berkeley by closing the achievement gap in Berkeley's public schools by the year 2020.The 2020 Vision began with a campaign by United in Action, a community-driven multi-ethnic coalition, to eliminate inequities in educational opportunities in Berkeley public schools. In June 2008, the Berkeley City Council and Berkeley Unified School District School Board adopted formal resolutions stating:
. ..all children, regardless of race, ethnicity and income, who enter Berkeley public schools beginning in 2007 (and remain in the district) will achieve equitable outcomes with no proficiency differences by the time they graduate in June, 2020; and that all children born in Berkeley in 2007 and beyond, receive a healthy start and are equally ready to learn and succeed in the Berkeley public schools.
The 2020 Vision is an ongoing collaboration between the following partners: City of Berkeley, Berkeley Unified School District, Berkeley Alliance, University of California- Berkeley, Berkeley City College, United in Action, Berkeley Federation of Teachers, Berkeley Organizing Congregations for Action, Berkeley Public Education Foundation, and the Berkeley Community.

How We Measure Success
We identified key measurable indicators evidenced to impact the racial disproportionality of academic achievement among Berkeley students. Based on national research and best practices, the indicators are:
Kindergarten Readiness
Reading Proficiency by 3rd Grade
Student Attendance
Successful Completion of Algebra or Interactive Math Program 2 by 9th grade
College & Career Readiness (As measured by completion of A‐G Requirements-Courses required for entry into UC/CSU schools)
Disproportionality in Suspensions and Police Contacts
Student Engagement
These measures have helped in our planning and will allow us to assess how we are doing in our work. We are currently working to refine the specifics of these measures and establish baseline data and systems for data collection. For an overview of how our work is organized click here.
Nationally, Kindergarten Readiness, Reading Proficiency by 3rd Grade, and Student Attendance are recognized as critical gateways for student success and key components in closing the academic achievement gap. Building upon this evidence, these three areas were selected first (among the indicators we identified) for inter‐agency collaborative program development currently underway.Service providers, agencies, community-based organizations and issue‐area experts were convened in spring 2011 to help refine strategies into implementable work plans.
